KAIRNEXA Decision Field

Before you decide, can you answer four questions?

The Decision Field is the model KAIRNEXA uses to look at a decision. Four angles, four questions. It does not tell you what to decide. It tells you what is not yet clear.

KAIRNEXA Decision Field

Facts  ·  Assumptions  ·  Trade-offs  ·  Ownership

Is this decision ready to be made?

Write straight into the four boxes, in that order, without skipping the second. Allow twenty minutes.

The decision
01  FACTS

What do we actually know?

What is established, dated, verifiable. Separate what you have observed from what has been reported to you. Part of what you call “the facts” is often a summary produced by someone who already held a view.

02  ASSUMPTIONS

What are we treating as fact?

The things nobody questions any more because they have been repeated. These cost the most: they are not false by nature, they are simply unchecked. Name them and see which ones hold.

03  TRADE-OFFS

What are we really giving up?

Every decision closes a door. An option presented as having no downside is a poorly examined option. Write down what each scenario costs you, not only what it brings.

04  OWNERSHIP

Who must own this decision?

Not who will approve it, nor who will execute it: who will carry its consequences in front of the others. A decision with no identified owner has not been made, it has been announced.

If even one of those four answers stays blurred, your decision probably is too.

How to use it

Take a decision you keep putting off. Answer the four questions in writing, in that order, without skipping the second. Allow twenty minutes. The model is yours: no sign-up, no address to leave, nothing to download.

It works alone. It works better with someone else, because the second question is hard to answer on your own: what you treat as fact is precisely what you no longer see.

What it is not

It is not a decision-support method, a scoring grid, or a prioritisation tool. It does not compare options and it produces no recommendation. It establishes whether a decision is ready to be made.

Where it sits

The Decision Field is the only model we make public: what we look at inside a decision. How a session runs is described on the How we work page. The eleven situations show what it looks like in the field.

The Decision Field makes you write your assumptions down. It does not tell you which ones are wrong. That is what someone across the table does.

Challenge a decision you have already framed → Thirty minutes, no commitment and no charge.
